In 1973 it was realised that traditional customs and art were slowly dying out. Plans were therefore made to educate Nevisians culturally and to make them aware of the wealth of local folklore and customs. Shows and street theatre were taken to the villages around the island. It was on this background that in 1974 the festival "Culturama" was organised to give a vital thrust to our dying traditional custom to revive an interest in our folk art.
Culturama is a five day exposition of Art & Craft, Music, Dance, Drama, Calypso, Talent shows, and a parade of old fashioned troupes and bands. Placed in its historical context, Culturama was born partly out of the frustration by a group of young Nevisians, who were being forced to curtail their freedom of expression, and partially out of a recognition for the need to protect what is inherently Nevisian.
After twenty-five years, Culturama is now considered more than just an annual forum for cultural expression. It is a major income generator for the locals. More importantly, it is one of those rare occasions when class barriers are broken down and the entire local population, and visitors alike, become culturally assimilated and socially united. As the only truly national festival dedicated to the preservation of Nevisian Folklore, Culturama is, and will remain, an important part of the Nevisian psyche.
